Well, it certainly has been an interesting two days in the Champions League. Yesterday we wrote about Messi and his beautiful hat-trick in the first game. Today, we bring you news of Ronaldo’s first ever UCL red card in over 150 appearances.
Not 30 minutes into the Juventus game against Valencia, Ronaldo gets caught up in a controversial call from the referee. In an off-the-ball clash against Valencia’s Jeison Murillo, the defender gets knocked to the ground. Ronaldo then appears to put his hand on Murillo’s head and though it looks like a non-violent gesture, the defender seemed not to have taken it well. Some say it looks like he was tugging on his hair, others say it was a simple pat on the head.
After a discussion with his assistant, the referee called it a red card. Ronaldo – and many of his teammates – surprisingly looked confused and tried to protest. Unfortunately, VAR isn’t really a thing yet in the UCL as it was in the World Cup so the call remains just that: controversial.
You can check out the video for yourself below. The quality really isn’t that clear but you can get a pretty good view of what goes down:
Ronaldo left the pitch distraught and in tears, and we can completely understand his pain. Juventus’ next game is against Young Boys, which he’s definitely set to miss. It’s unclear if he will also be missing the games against Manchester United scheduled for next month, though it’s possible if they deem the offense to be more serious.
How are people reacting?
Twitter had jokes, of course, but there was also a lot of contention from both fans and non-fans alike.

I know everyone likes to laugh at Ronaldo when he's upset, but I honestly cannot see what he's been sent off for on the replays so far— Paolo Bandini (@Paolo_Bandini) September 19, 2018
Referee here has lost the plot completely. Singlehandedly deciding the game. You never, ever give a red card for that? A head pat on Murillo from Ronaldo? That’s disgraceful from the referee.— Matteo Bonetti (@TheCalcioGuy) September 19, 2018
Even Ronaldo’s sister had something to say about it:

People will be talking about this decision for a while, as it will definitely have its implications in the upcoming games. While it’s true that Ronaldo had a slow start with his new team, that doesn’t disregard his potential in the Champions League.
