From soccer superstar to bikini supermodel, Alex Morgan certainly has our attention. She takes a break from captaining the US Women’s National Team (USWNT) to jet off to St. Lucia for her photo shoot for the cover of Sports Illustrated’s 2019 Swimsuit Edition. She didn’t stay for long though, as the group stage for the 2019 Women’s World Cup is about to commence in just under 3 weeks.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been lucky enough to see Alex Morgan in Sports Illustrated. Her debut in the much-awaited Swimsuit edition was back in 2012 – and it was a memorable one to boot. She participated in the body paint section rocking a geometrically-printed bikini painted onto her slim but rocking body. Two years later in 2014, she came back for a swimsuit shoot in Guana Island. Now, she’s made it onto the cover with supermodel Tyra Banks and model (also the girlfriend of retired New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski) Camille Kostek.

She’s not the only member of the USWNT to make it onto this year’s issue, either. Alex herself handpicked 3 other teammates – Megan Rapinoe, Crystal Dunn, and Abby Dahlkemper – to show the youth, diversity, and experience of their team.
In her behind the scenes interview, Alex talks about how being in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition makes her feel empowered being with so many other incredible women. She also mentions the vulnerability and confidence that comes with a feat like this, not necessarily when it comes to showing off her body but just to show the result of all her training, sacrifice, and general hard work to get where she is now. She actually had no idea that she was going to be on the cover of the magazine, which they surprised her with during the interview.
And it is pretty impressive what she’s been able to achieve at such a young age of 29 both inside and outside the world of soccer.
Alex Morgan on the Soccer Field
Alex was on the USWNT before she was even drafted into women’s professional soccer. When Alex joined the USWNT in 2009, she was the youngest member of the team at only 20 years old. At the 2011 Women’s Professional Soccer Draft, she was the first overall pick by the Western New York Flash. Just one year later, she won her first Olympic gold medal, defeating Japan in the finals. At the 2015 Women’s World Cup, she was one of the superstars leading the team to win the trophy against the same team they had lost to in the 2011 World Cup – Japan.
After the WPS suspended operations in 2012, Alex joined WNT teammates in the National Women’s Soccer League. She signed with the Seattle Sounders (2012), Portland Thorns FC (2013-2015), and then Orlando Pride (2016 to present). While playing with Orlando Pride, she was loaned to the French team, Lyon. There, she also made a name for herself in the French Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League stages.
She has had a total of 101 goals in 160 appearances throughout her career. In 2018, she received the US Soccer’s Female Player of the Year.
Alex Morgan Off the Soccer Field
Apart from her achievements on the soccer field, Alex Morgan has also had a hand in several other industries. In 2012, she signed a contract with Simon & Schuster to author a four-part book series for middle-schoolers titled The Kicks. Since then, the books have been made into a live-action kids comedy series of the same name, available on Amazon Prime.
She also has a slew of endorsements under her belt, including Coca-Cola, Panasonic, and Nike – among many other big names. She’s also been in magazines like Health, Vogue, Time, and of course, Sports Illustrated. She doesn’t even stop there! Alex has had several guest appearances on TV shows like Live with Kelly and Michael, The 99ers, and even had her likeness appear on The Simpsons. Her latest silver screen appearance was in 2018 with her acting debut in the movie Alex & Me, where she played a fictionalized version of herself.
The Personal Life of Alex Morgan
Not only is Alex a sensational soccer player herself, but she’s also a soccer WAG. She’s currently married to fellow soccer player Servando Carrasco, who also plays for LA Galaxy in the MLS. They met while still studying and playing soccer at UC Berkeley. Though they’ve been married since 2014, they have yet to have children.
