It’s a pretty common occurrence in the sports world to see extremely attractive couples. We always see famous athletes with fellow athletes, models, pageant queens, or celebrities by their sides. Joining the OppaSportsBet list of athlete WAGs is Kyle Van Noy’s beautiful wife, Marissa Powell.
Let’s Start With the Basics
Who’s Kyle Van Noy?
Kyle is an NFL linebacker for the New England Patriots. He’s just about started his pro-football career, as he was first drafted into the NFL by the Detroit Lions back in 2014. The Lions then traded him to the Patriots for the 2017 season, where he continues to play. With the Patriots, Kyle won his first two NFL championship rings.
His love for football started in high school, however. He was an all-state linebacker and receiver for McQueen High School and was named 63rd best high school athlete by ESPN. While attending Brigham Young University, he also played for the BYU Cougars football team. His college athletic career was so successful that he was projected to be a first or second-round pick for the 2013 NFL Draft while in his junior year, but he opted to stay in school to continue his senior year.
Now that we know a little about the athlete half of the couple, let’s talk about the real star of the show: his wife, Marissa Powell.
Who is Marissa Powell?
Apart from being Kyle’s lawfully wedded wife, what else is there to know about 27-year-old Marissa Powell (now Van Noy, of course)? We highlight some fast facts about this gorgeous, green-eyed brunette!
1. Marissa Powell is a former beauty pageant queen – and so is her sister.
Marissa was Miss Utah back in 2013 and represented her state at the 2013 Miss USA pageant, where she placed third runner-up.
During her reign a Miss Utah, her volunteer work included missions to Primary Children’s Hospital and ambassadorship for Hands for Haiti. With the latter, she visited orphanages in the country to help care for disabled children.
It’s not a huge shock that she made it big in the pageant scene – her long, brunette locks and light green eyes certainly make her quite a stunner to look at! She also has a naturally tall and athletic build – probably thanks to her high school and college days as a volleyball player.
Pageantry and good looks obviously run in the family. Her younger sister, Nicol, also went on to win the Miss Utah crown in 2015.
2. She fumbled – epically – over her answer in the Miss USA 2013 pageant.
I can’t imagine the immense pressure these pageant women are under during the Q&A portion of the pageants. With so many people watching nationwide and unexpected questions carrying a lot of weight, they can’t really afford to make any sort of mistake. Unfortunately, that’s what happened with Marissa during the Miss USA 2013 pageant when she was one of only six remaining finalists.
Judge Nene Leakes asked, “A recent report shows that in 40% of American families with children, women are the primary earners yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?”
Marissa very evidently fumbled over her answer, starting with, “I think we can relate this back to education, and how we are continuing to strive to…” before pausing and flashing her pearly whites in the awkward silence that followed. She finished up her response with “…figure out how to create jobs right now. That is the biggest problem. And I think especially the men are, um, seen as the leaders of this, and so we need to figure out how to create education better so that we can solve this problem.”
You could practically see viewers around the country cringing but all things considered, it wasn’t that bad and there have definitely been worse. A lot of people criticized her for her response, but she still managed to come in third runner-up.
3. Marissa – along with her husband Kyle – are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Both Marissa and Kyle have a very public relationship with religion. They are not remiss in their praise and thanks to God, especially from Kyle, which isn’t really something you see very often with celebrities. We can’t say exactly how big of an influence religion has had on their lives, but it’s clear that the influence is definitely there.
Both Marissa and Kyle attended Brigham Young University, which is actually one of the more well-known universities that subscribe to the Church Educational System (CES) Honor Code. In fact, Kyle had to sit out his first year at BYU due to an Honor Code violation.
The pair also got married at an LDS Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2014.
4. Marissa and Kyle’s relationship began before either was famous.
Like previously mentioned, Marissa Powell and Kyle Van Noy met while they were both attending BYU. After just a few short years of dating, Kyle proposed in December 2013 after she had passed on her Miss Utah crown to the next winner.
In a feature on KUTV News channel, the anchor actually described it as a “fairy-tale”, and this was echoed during the pair’s interview. Marissa agreed that she had found her Prince Charming, while Kyle called her his queen. At this time, they were preparing for two of the biggest moments in their lives: their wedding, set for June 2014, and his looming draft into the NFL.
Since then, they have continually supported each other through their respective careers. As of writing, they are expecting their first child in September 2019 and have decided to wait until birth to find out the gender.
5. Marissa co-founded the Van Noy Valor Foundation.
The Van Noy Valor Foundation is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth by providing them with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to achieve success in their lives.
This mission of the foundation likely stemmed from personal experiences of both Marissa Powell and Kyle Van Noy. Kyle was adopted as a baby, and he often speaks of how grateful he is for the opportunities and the second chance he was given in life. Marissa’s father and younger brother were also adopted, and she did a lot of volunteer work in orphanages as part of her philanthropic work.
They have organized numerous events with a variety of partners like Walmart and College Funding 123.
