At OppaSportsBet, we often feature football WAGs who have nothing to do with the sports their men play. Instead, they’re usually models, entrepreneurs, fashion designers, or some combination of the three. Today, we’ll look at a WAG who is probably more successful than her husband, National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) star Sydney Leroux Dwyer. To prove it, she’s won gold medals with the U.S. National Team at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2015 World Cup. She’s also a successful striker for the Orlando Pride.
Training while expecting
Leroux caused a stir online in March when she participated in training while 6 months pregnant with her second child. When she appeared at the Orlando Pride’s first preseason training session of the 2019 season, she was 24 weeks pregnant. Her baby bump was noticeable under her jersey.
I didn’t think I’d be starting off preseason 5.5 months pregnant but here we are. 😂 pic.twitter.com/smuA4nFx9n— Sydney Leroux Dwyer (@sydneyleroux) March 4, 2019
Sports writer Jon Culver quickly rushed to reassure fans who may have worried about her safety. He tweeted that she was training “in a non-contact capacity.” Soon enough, Leroux herself took to social media to describe her safe training regimen. According the Olympian, she did non-contact work and practiced ball handling and her first touch. She clarified that she didn’t do any high-intensity work.
I just do non contact stuff. Ball work. Getting touches in. I don’t put myself in situations where the ball can ricochet or I can get hit. No high intensity running and I listen to my OB (who knows more than people on twitter telling me what I shouldn’t be doing with MY body 😉). https://t.co/GoFOXXYVyb— Sydney Leroux Dwyer (@sydneyleroux) March 5, 2019
Thankfully, Leroux also received an outpouring of support from fans who were happy to see her healthy enough to attend training.
Who is Sydney Leroux Dwyer?
Sydney Leroux was born in Canada on May 7, 1990. She has played football at the elite level her whole life, representing Canada in youth tournaments. Starting in 2008, she decided to play for the United States women’s team and made her senior debut in 2012. Since then, she’s amassed over 75 appearances. She was a key piece of the women’s teams that won the 2012 London Olympics and the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
She started playing professional football in 2013 when she debuted for the Boston Breakers in the NWSL’s first season. In the NWSL, she has also played for Seattle Reign FC, Western New York Flash, and FC Kansas City. In her years of pro play, she’s been an effective attacker, scoring in almost a third of her games.
In 2015, she married English-American Major League Soccer pro Dominic Dwyer. Dwyer plays for MLS team Orlando City and for the U.S. Men’s National Team. On September 10, 2016, their first son was born, Cassius Cruz. The adorable toddler has been a fixture of his parents’ games and Instagram feeds. In November 2018, the soccer power couple announced that they were expecting another child. This second bundle of joy was the one who made an appearance alongside, or should we say, inside of, his or her mother at training camp last March.
While Leroux certainly rocked the Pride’s training session in March, she ended up sitting the season out on maternity leave. She’s due any time now, as evidenced by her latest Instagram posts where she still looks gorgeous.
We wish Sydney a safe birth and hope she gets back in action on the field when she’s ready!
