After 15 years representing his country, Wesley Sneijder played his official last game with the Netherlands national team. Though he announced his international retirement back in March 2018, he was granted a farewell match against Peru on September 6, 2018. After the game – which they won 2-1 – he and his family sat in a makeshift living room in the middle of the pitch to watch his career highlights and goodbyes from teammates and managers.
ESPN’s Elko Born reported that Sneijder’s manager Bert van Marwijik, claims he was the greatest No. 10 that the Netherlands ever had. This was seen during the 2010 World Cup and his first season with Inter Milan, where he scored 8 goals in 41 appearances.
Our curiosity was piqued by the family picture above, so we wanted to take a closer look. More specifically, we want to know more about his wife, Yolanthe Sneijder-Cabau. It turns out, Yolanthe is quite a popular celebrity herself. Here are the important things you need to know about his stunning wife.
1. She’s half-Spanish, half-Dutch.
Her father, Xavier Cabau, is Spanish and her mother, Rici van Kasbergen, is Dutch. Yolanthe herself was born on the Spanish island of Ibiza. However, when she was five years old, her mother decided to move her and her siblings back to the Netherlands. Here, she spent the rest of her childhood and where her eventual career would blossom. The move was in the wake of the many controversies that followed her businessman father, which we’ll cover later on in this article. She has seven siblings, and an additional five half-siblings from her father’s second marriage.
2. Her father has an interesting history of his own.
Her father was a controversial businessman who was known as the “King of Ibiza”. He owned several hotels, nightclubs, and discotheques. Many of the hotels were inherited from his own father, who built the chains when Xavier was just a boy. The nightclubs, however, were his endeavor.
He was first in the papers for an incident at one of his nightclubs. After announcing that he would be closing it, his staff went on a five-day hunger strike that had to end due to serious health issues. Soon after, a Belgian newspaper reported that he had accusations of domestic abuse against him from two of his previous partners. The case was dismissed, however, due to lack of evidence. In 1995, he was arrested again in 1995 after stabbing two Colombian tourists, though he managed to pay the bail after only 5 months.
He made attempts to revive some of his nightclubs but was not successful. He passed away in 2007; authorities ruled out any third parties and confirmed that the most likely cause was a brain hemorrhage. It was very fortunate that Yolanthe and her siblings were taken back to the Netherlands, where she was raised away from the scandals.
3. She decided to pursue acting at the age of 16.
She decided to pursue an acting career after she graduated from high school at 16 years old. According to her personal website, she started acting in a TV series in 2001. She got her first film role for Snowfever in 2004 and in 2005, she became a recurring cast member of a Dutch soap opera for three years. She also appeared in the third season of the dramedy series Voetbalvrouwen, a show similar to the British series Footballer’s Wives.
She has a few international titles to her name as well, the first two being voice roles. In 2006, she provided a voice in the Dutch version of Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. Two years later in 2008, she was the voice of Tijger in the Dutch version of Kung Fu Panda.
In 2013, she was in the American dark comedy crime film Pain & Gain, where she played the romantic interest of Mark Wahlberg. She also had a minor role in 2015’s Kidnapping Freddy Heineken.
Currently, is busy shooting a new detective series that will air in January 2019.
4. Her relationship with Wesley started in 2009
The pair started seeing each other back in 2009 after Wesley left his first wife, and they got married the following year. Their wedding was on July 17, only 6 days after Wesley played in the 2010 World Cup finals against Spain. They were married in Tuscany, Italy, with a pastel theme that fits perfectly into the quaint village setting of Castelnuovo Berardenga.
It looks like a happily ever after, but the beginning of their relationship wasn’t exactly free from scandal. According to Daily Mail, their relationship was made public when CCTV footage of the two locking lips in a parking lot was released. At the time, Yolanthe was living with her then-boyfriend, pop star Jan Smit. Sympathy was, of course, pointed towards Smit and Wesley’s ex-wife and their son, Jessey.
Unsurprisingly, by the time Wesley and Yolanthe were engaged and married, the anger towards their affair had already faded. 4-year old Jessey was even present at their wedding in a matching blue suit with his father.
In 2015, Yolanthe gave birth to her own adorable baby boy, Xess Xava Sneijder.
5. She is a co-founder of a foundation called Free A Girl.
According to their website, Free A Girl (previously called Stop Child Abuse foundation) was founded in 2008 and is dedicated to ending child prostitution. The organization works toward helping to liberate underage girls from brothels, provide them with safe shelter, and assist in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
They have had projects in Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Iraq, Nepal, the Netherlands, and Thailand.
6. She has her own entrepreneurial ventures.
She owns a restaurant and bar in Ibiza called XaXa. The restaurant’s website introduces it as a gastronomical brain-child of the couple, inspired by the dishes they’ve encountered in their travels. They brag of “epicurean delights” and “ultra-fresh sushi offerings”, and at a premium price, too. It certainly seems enticing, but the minimum-£30 main courses are keeping it a pipe dream for now.
She is the founder of her own jewelry brand called YC Jewelry, which launched in 2013. She designs and develops her own pieces, including the unique collections – all of which are now exclusively available at the XaXa Boutique.
XaXa Boutique is the store expansion of the restaurant. They sell clothing, swimsuits, and of course, the YC jewelry.
7. Dutch FHM’s Sexiest Dutch Woman
Back in 2006, 2007, and 2009, the Dutch FHM voted Yolanthe as the Sexiest Dutch Woman (well deserved, TBH). She’s been on the cover of the men’s magazine even more times than that. Naturally, she has been on the cover of and featured in several fashion magazines as well.
