In their first game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) obliterated Thailand 13-0 and set a new record for widest margin of victory at the competition.
The USWNT are World Cup defending champions and look poised to defend it with this dominating victory in Reims, France. Star striker Alex Morgan led the rout, scoring five goals for a team that faced little challenge from Thailand. The 2015 World Cup winners were up by 3 goals at halftime before scoring four times in ten minutes.
This win tops the 7-0 victory the USWNT logged against Chinese Taipei in the 1991 competition. It also means the US team has continued their unbeatable run of form since July 2017. If they carry on like this, the USWNT could be the second nation to win two Cups in a row. Germany won two straight World Cups in 2003 and 2007. If they reach the final of the tournament, it will be their third consecutive championship match.
Alex Morgan scores 5 for the USWNT
Orlando Pride star forward and USWNT captain Alex Morgan led the American charge, scoring five goals including their first. Her quintet of goals were followed by Rose Lavelle and Samantha Mewis’ two. Lindsey Horan, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh, and Carli Lloyd each notched one goal apiece.
Morgan, 29, has been a mainstay of the National Team since 2010. She was the youngest player in silver medal-winning USWNT at the 2011 Women’s World Cup. Morgan also led the team to the United States’ third World Cup victory in 2015.
After the record-breaking game, Morgan told The Guardian, “We really just came into the game really wanting to showcase ourselves. Every goal matters in this tournament and that’s what we were working on.”
Before joining her team in France for the World Cup, Alex Morgan showcased herself equally impressively by gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. Her spread was shot in St. Lucia and featured tasteful body paint and swimwear. The photoshoot demonstrated how Morgan can be as elegant and sexy off the field as deadly and determined on it.
USWNT are World Cup Favorites
After their record-shattering 13-0 victory against Thailand, the USWNT went on to win their remaining group games against Sweden and Chile. In the group stages alone, the team scored 18 goals and conceded none. They went on to book a place in the World Cup quarterfinals against hosts France after defeating Spain 2-1 in the last 16.
Their dominating performances so far in the World Cup have made the USWNT favorites to lift the trophy. Against France, they are slight favorites to win, even with the former playing on home turf. According to Oppabet odds, the odds of the US advancing to the semifinals are 1.6, compared to France’s 2.216. The game will take place on Friday evening at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France.
